genetic engineering and molecular biology can be made manifest in plants through application of various techniques developed in the field of plant tissue culture. Several exciting developments have taken place in this area since the publication of the first edition of this book. Many of the crop plants regarded as recalcitrant are now amendable to regeneration in vitro using cultured protoplasts, cells, or calli; thus each of them can be used as a tool in plant genetic manipulation programs. Considerable progress has been made with regard to the development of embryogenic cultures. Additionally, the application of tissue culture to plant breeding, horticulture, forestry, industrial production of compounds, and conservation of ever depleting natural genetic resources has been the focal point of research over the past two decades. The first edition of this title was brought out as an introductory text covering these aspects so that it could be used both in the class room as teaching material and in the laboratory for practical research purposes. Since the first edition was received well by students, teachers, scientists, as well as professionals in the industry the second edition was prepared without disturbing the original structure of the book. On account of the proliferation of literature in this field substantial updates were necessary. Besides that the presentation, layout and illustrations have been improved."
