are severl basic reasons:
1. Chemistry is an experimental science. Its home is in the labratory and its major goal is to create good things (for example, medicines, hojme products, and food preservatives) for human life. The best wat to learn chemistry is, obvious, to practice doing it in a labratory. THIS TEXT IS MEANT FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO LEARN CHEMISTRY BY PRACTICING IT IN THE LABRATORY.
2. The manual conatins experiments that are menat for college-level chemistry courses and avoids, as far as practicable, repeitive materal that is generally learned at the high-school level. However, reviewing some of the basic labratory techniques is essential. A GOOD NUMBER OF EXPERIMENTS ARE THEREFORE PROVIDED AT THE SAME TIME, WILL SERVE AS THE LINK BETWEEN WHAT STUDENTS HAVE LEARNED IN HIGH SCHOOL AND WHAT IS EXPECTED OF THEM ATTHE COLLEGE LEVEL.
3. This book is the outcome of a course that has been successfully offered at Merrimack College and elsewhere at the first-year chemistry level. The most difficult part of teaching thios course has been the nonavailability of a suitable text for the labratory. TO FILL THE VOID, WE HAVE DEVELOPED THIS MANUAL
4. There is a strong demand for educated chemists in the chemical manufacturing industry, in the pharmaceutical industry, in analytical and enviromental laboratories, in other chemistry-related industries, and finally, in the development if new, enviromentally friendly processes. Good, solid training in labratory practice--involving not only the minimum basic techniques supporting micro- and macroscale experimenjtation but also the use of modern instrumentation--is essential. WE BELIEVE THAT THIS LABRATORY MANUAL PROVIDES SUCH TRAINING.
